Mason shrugged faintly.



"If you stick around to have anything."

Alyson winced.



" do you not want to have me around anymore?"

"I did, but... you didn't seem to want anyone anymore."



He was scared to believe you were okay.

Alyson looked crushed.



" I don't want to have them die... "



She offered, swallowing.





" And i'm no help, completely worthless."





Meanwhile, little Ben was struggling with recovery, but was out of surgery right now.

"You were obviously worth something to someone. We wouldnt' have worked so hard to keep you here and a part of things if that weren't true."

Cael called her back, now worried twice over.

Alyson answered, still cuddled in Mason's lap.



" hi... is he ok?"



she asked gently.

"It's up in the air," Cael answered honestly.



"But we kind of expected it to be a little rough coming out of surgery since he's so little and such. We'll know a later - we have to see how he does as things start having a chance to stabilize."

Alyson nodded, nuzzling Mason as she fought her tears.



" Which hospital? "



She asked him, petting at her daughter as she fought and failed to keep it together.

Cael rattled off the name.



"It's probably an hour drive or so from where you are now."

" Yeah, I'm with Mason and our little girl right now."



Alyson offered, kissing at Mason.



" ... I love you."



She offered faintly.

"Are you okay?"



Cael's turn to approach her message.

Alyson swallowed.



" I hate tight spaces... someone please don't let them into the morgue."

"What happened?"

Alyson was shaking,mind turning.



" I wanted out... You were so mean, and our son was.. possibly still is, dying... and you were so hurtful, and I need you and Mason both right now, and I know it's selfish but I already feel useless and worthless, and..."



She was crying and holding as tight as she could manage to Mason at this moment.

"I'm sorry," came a strained and distant whisper from the other end of the phone.



"Don't mind me..."

Alyson shook her head, already having a cab called for her.



" No... I love you... I just... I don't think the medicine is working anymore, it feels like the world is suffocating me... I am sorry Cael.... I love you.... Call me if there is a change, please?"



She asked, wiping at her tears and waiting for the confirmation before hanging up and kissing Mason.



" Stay with her... I... even if he's going to die, i want to say good bye."



She explained gently, kissing Mason again before moving off. She would be at the hospital in about an hour and a half after speaking with Cael, in which time little Ben was crashing repeatedly.

Cael had meant to tell her to mention it to the doctors if her meds weren't enough, but... He was distracted now. The man just stood there with his arm crossed, peering through the glass with a concerned scowl.

Alyson would have to argue a moment or ten but would soon slip up to Cael, looking over him.



" How are you?"



Alyson asked, looking over Cael. She looked like she really had just been dead, eyes slightly sunken, her entire body bleach white. She needed to eat and rest or she would be back to dead soon enough, but given everything convincing her to do either right now would be impossible.

"Alive."



Cael shrugged a little.



"Maybe a little better than you have been the last couple days?"

Alyson looked down.



" Mason said it's been four days."



Alsyon replied, shrugging.



" I have no idea how I'm here right now."



She offered, looking to her son. Half her soul seemed to be dying just looking at the little boy.



" How is he?"

"Has it?"



Cael hadn't really noted any days. One or fifteen. All the same. His eyes remained on the baby.



"Breathing."

Alyson nodded slowly.



" I am sorry I can not be what you need..."

"I didn't even say anything about you."



Cael's ability to coddle at the moment was limping.

Alyson winced, looking to her son.



" I am sorry i could not carry him sufficiently."





And she moved to be by the window, looking in at her son, whispering the softest of goodbyes. She was so sad to do it like this, but she worried if she got closer he'd shadow again and kill himself.



She looked away and left Cael alone with his son, calling Mason out in the hall and just breaking down into tears. He wouldn't get too many words, once in a while a sorry, maybe he'd catch 'stay dead'.... she had a serious mind f*** happening right now. dying, and watching your kid die would both do it to a person, so with the double dip she seemed justified in her tears.

"You did your best. I'm not angry with you."











"Alyson... come on... You..."

Alyson clung to her phone as she sobbed herself sick, having eaten nothing, she would choke and cough and cry harder, starting to struggle to breath. Eventually she would force herself to move, finding herself in the middle of a town she didn't know, barely able to keep herself warm as the evening chill sat in. Her cell phone battery had died in her 'talk' with mason, and the poor woman would resume tears at this point.

Cael sank onto the bench beside her, dropping a bag of chips into her lap. He had the same kind in his hands. The vending machine didn't really have anything good in it.

Alyson looked up, and kind of scooted away, eyes filling with tears all over again.



"I am so sorry."

"It's not your fault."



Cael shrugged as he idly shoved chip after chip into his mouth like a procedure.

Alyson shrugged, ignoring the chips in her laps, swallowing hard as she held herself.



" I will find a cab and leave you be. "



Alyson promised, heartbroken as she would move to stand.



" I... let me know if something happens..."



she asked, walking from him now.

"Alyson, come sit back down."

Alyson winced and stood there, swallowing as she forced herself to turn around and sit. Nothing, not a word from her as she just sat there.

"Eat the chips."



Cael was obviously forcing himself to eat his.

Alyson looked over the chips a moment and seemed to eat three or four before she seemed to lack the energy to move.

"I get that you don't want to be here."

Alyson shook her head.



" I just realized i shouldn't have shown up. It was my mistake... i just wanted to tell him goodbye."

"Why shouldn't you have shown up?"

Alyson looked over Cael.



" because i failed, and i've failed too much.."



She looked to the chips in her hands now, and handed them to him now before she stood and picked a direction to walk in.

"You didn't fail."

Alyson shook her head.



" I couldn't even die right."



and with that, she was gone down the sidewalk.
